Shiva permeates North India in three great forms: as Kashi Vishwanath — the lord of the universe who whispers liberation to the dying; as the presiding divine at Prayagraj, where the sacred confluence purifies all karma; and as Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain — the only Jyotirlinga that faces south, the direction of Yama, the lord of death.
